A snuffle mat is a mat filled with soft fabric squares in which you hide your dog’s dry food. Instead of wolfing down his portion in thirty seconds, your dog has to search for it with his nose. This turns a one-minute meal into a playful activity lasting ten to twenty minutes.
Searching by scent is work for the head. For many dogs that is a different kind of effort than movement, and one you can offer indoors when the weather has other plans.
A mat containing food is bound to get dirty. The Zeno snuffle mat can be machine-washed at 40 degrees and then tumble-dried on a low heat, after which it’ll come out looking as good as new. A mat you’re afraid to wash will be unusable after two weeks.
No garish colours such as bright blue, bright yellow or lime green. Instead, four modern, muted colour ranges that will fit perfectly into your home.
For a dog, sniffing is not a pastime but a way of gathering information. In 2019, researchers Charlotte Duranton and Alexandra Horowitz compared dogs that spent two weeks doing nose work with dogs that were walked on a lead.
The dogs that were allowed to sniff around were more optimistic afterwards. In the test, they walked more quickly towards a bowl without knowing whether it contained anything. The researchers see this as a sign that a dog expects more positive things to happen.
A busy nose makes for a calm dog.
A dense, matt fleece that feels soft against the nose, on a sturdy backing with a non-slip reverse side and a finished piping around the entire edge. Washable at 40 degrees; tumble drying permitted at a low temperature. The search pockets are sewn in such a way that the lining really tucks inside them and that they open up again after washing and drying.

A snuffle mat hides your dog’s food amongst pieces of fabric, so that he has to find it with his nose. It turns mealtimes into a scavenger hunt rather than a rush to eat, and it’s a way to keep your dog occupied without having to go outside.
For almost any dog that eats dry food or treats, from puppies to senior dogs. Large dogs need more space than small ones. Dogs that eat dust or tear their mats to pieces should only be allowed to use them under supervision.
It varies greatly. A trained dog that finds it easy to fill the toy can do it in five minutes, whilst a puppy doing it for the first time might take twenty minutes. You can make it more difficult by hiding the food deeper inside and overlapping the pieces of fabric.
Ours certainly do, at 40 degrees with a mild detergent. Afterwards, it can go in the tumble dryer on a low heat setting, which helps the pilling to come loose again. Skip the fabric softener, as it flattens the fleece and traps odours. Shake the mat out before putting it in the machine.
Treats and dry food work best. Wet food, pasta or cheese are fine, but they soak into the fibres, so you’ll need to wash the mat straight away. For wet treats, a licking mat is a better choice than a snuffle mat.
We comply with the OEKO-TEX® Standard 100, a globally recognised certification that guarantees a textile product is free from harmful concentrations of hazardous substances. The mat comes into contact with your favourite pet’s food and must remain 100% safe, which is why we do not use Chinese suppliers – something that cannot be said of the cheap alternatives on these platforms.
We’re currently in the production phase and are finalising the fabrics and colours. We won’t announce an exact date until the first production run has been ordered. Those on the waiting list will be the first to know. But we hope to launch soon. Please add your name to our waiting list below.
